Therapy groups are groups of two or more people (three may
work the best depending on the type of group) gathering together
to discuss a certain topic that relates to those involved in the
group, such as abuse, co-dependency, trauma or substance abuse,
etc. Groups are formed to fit the needs of its group members.
Therapy group can be beneficial in many ways. For example, those
involved may form close friendships, groups are a form of support
systems, group members may realize they have others who can relate
to their situation or feelings and groups offer various view points
and advice.
There are many different types of groups, which
cover various issues and topics. There are groups for all age
brackets. Some groups are set on specific topics while others
are open to what is discussed each session. There are groups that
run mornings, afternoons or evenings. Some examples of types of
therapy groups include: trauma; family; relationships; stress;
women’s; men’s; co-ed; children’s; substance
abuse; grief; depression; dream; boundary; anger; self-esteem;
co-dependency and art therapy groups; among many others.
